Understanding Your OSHA Course Exam Attempts: What You Need to Know

Passing your OSHA course exams doesn't have to be stressful — as long as you understand how the attempt system works. Here's a clear breakdown of the rules so you can approach every exam with confidence.

You Get Three Attempts Per Exam

Each exam within your OSHA course allows up to three attempts. To pass, you need to score at least 70%. If you don't hit that mark on your first try, don't panic — you have two more chances.

Three Failures Means Course Failure

If you receive a failing grade three times on the same exam, that exam — and the course as a whole — is considered a failure. Unfortunately, at that point you cannot continue where you left off. You'll need to register for and start a brand-new course from the very beginning.

Because of this, it's worth taking a moment between attempts to review the material rather than rushing back in.

A Word on Connection Issues vs. Failed Grades

Technology isn't perfect, and sometimes connections drop mid-exam. Here's how that's handled:

• Dropped connection with no score recorded: If your exam attempt is interrupted and no grade was ever logged, that attempt can be reset. You won't lose one of your three tries.
• A failed grade: Once a score is recorded — even a failing one — it cannot be reset under any circumstances. That attempt counts, no exceptions.

This distinction matters, so it's a good idea to avoid actions that might accidentally cause a failing score to register (see below).

If You Fail: Don't Refresh the Page

This is one of the most important things to remember. If you fail an exam attempt — whether it's your first or second try — do not refresh the page. Refreshing can interfere with how your attempt is recorded and may cause complications.

Instead, follow these steps:

1. Return to your control panel.
2. Scroll down to the last module you completed.
3. Review that material carefully before starting your next attempt.

Taking the time to revisit the content gives you a much better shot at passing on your next try.

The Slate Is Wiped Clean With Each New Exam

Here's the good news: your three attempts are tracked per exam, not for the course as a whole. If you pass an exam — whether it takes you one, two, or all three attempts — you move on to the next exam with a fresh set of three attempts. There's no cumulative penalty for needing extra tries, as long as you pass before running out of attempts on any single exam.
